3rd Infantry Division Launches Inaugural Seize the Marne Event to Honor Legacy

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a historic first, the 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) has introduced a new tradition called Seize the Marne as part of its Salute to Summer celebration, combining history with camaraderie and competition.

Inspired by the division’s courageous actions during the Battle of the Marne in World War I, this inaugural event served as a tribute that engaged Soldiers in a full-sensory experience, linking past valor with current pride.

Sgt. Yuvia Tonche, from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I liked it. It was different from what we normally do and was a great way to remember the division’s history.”

The event showcased the unity and resilience of the Soldiers, featuring a full day of competitions alongside commemorative activities.

Participants faced challenges reminiscent of their predecessors’ trials, including muddy low crawls, anti-vehicle trench crossings, and simulated river crossings, all culminating in a vigorous tug-of-war battle.

Each obstacle symbolized the determination of 3rd ID Soldiers who bravely defended the line against German forces during the epic battle in 1918.

The day’s events concluded with a poignant patching ceremony, designed to deepen the connections between Soldiers and the rich heritage of their division.

This occasion was not solely focused on physical endurance; it emphasized remembrance and pride in a cause greater than the individual.

Together, Soldiers stood united, affirming with the powerful declaration, “Nous Resterons Là,” which translates to “We will remain here.”

The planning of Seize the Marne was a significant undertaking, marked by detailed logistics and extensive coordination efforts aimed at making the event impactful.

Every aspect was carefully orchestrated to pay homage to the legacy born along the Marne River in France, reinforcing to today’s Soldiers the profound meaning of wearing their unit patch.

Feedback from the Soldiers was immediate and overwhelmingly positive, with participants across various ranks describing Seize the Marne as one of the most significant experiences of their military careers.

Reflecting on the event, former service members expressed a desire for similar initiatives during their time, highlighting the novelty of experiencing their unit’s history in such a tangible way.

“I was excited to be there and take part in an event with the entire division. It made me feel like I was involved with something important,” remarked Staff Sgt. Dean Johnson from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade.

The positive reactions from those involved served as the ultimate affirmation for the leaders and organizers.

Creating a memorable experience leaves a lasting imprint, resonating in the minds of Soldiers and reflected in the stories and pride shared as they don their uniforms each day.

As the Army approaches its 250th anniversary of excellence in 2025, the debut of Seize the Marne serves as a vital reminder that legacy is constructed through the dedicated actions of individuals committed to showing up each day with purpose.
