Parent Threatens Teacher at Bailey Middle School, Security Concerns Raised

A serious security incident occurred at Bailey Middle School in March, where a parent allegedly threatened to shoot and kill a teacher after claiming her daughter was mocked.

The alarming situation unfolded on March 28, when the parent was escorted off campus by school district personnel before the police were called.

According to Lt. Bryan Zink from the Clark County School District (CCSD) police, two warrants were submitted for the woman’s arrest due to threats made against a school employee and for disturbing the peace at the school.

Details of the threats were disclosed in a letter from Principal Danielle Duterte, which highlighted the parent’s aggressive remarks towards the teacher.

The letter cites specific threats, including: “I will shoot you,” and “Me and my boyfriend will catch you outside. You will never be safe as a teacher here.”

Furthermore, the parent is reported to have threatened a male student as well, escalating the concern for safety at the school.

After being removed from the campus, the parent remained in the school’s parking lot for an additional 20 minutes, during which she continued to make disturbing comments, including, “You are going to have to lock these doors. I will put you in a hard lockdown.”

In light of these threats, the discussion surrounding campus security has intensified.

Emails between Principal Duterte and school district officials revealed frustrations over the delayed installation of a security gate, first requested in 2019, which is now not expected to be completed until 2027.

Abraham Camejo, a member of the Clark County School District Bond Oversight Committee, advocated for immediate security improvements at a recent committee meeting, emphasizing that the safety of students and staff should not wait until 2027 for enhancements.

Camejo expressed concerns about ongoing security issues, citing that principals and staff had communicated their feelings of being unsafe at the school multiple times over the years.

“As a father, I can’t sit here not prepared to protect our students,” he stated during the meeting, highlighting the urgency of addressing security measures.

Brandon McLaughlin, the assistant superintendent of construction and development, responded to advocates’ concerns but noted that any decision to expedite security measures would require reporting to Superintendent Jhone Ebert and the Clark County School Board.

He did mention, however, that in emergencies, there might be ways to act quickly without going through board procedures, as outlined by specific legal guidelines.

In a statement, CCSD reassured the community of its commitment to safety, noting, “CCSD prioritizes the safety and wellness of all students.”

The district has been actively implementing security enhancements since the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

These initiatives include creating controlled points of entry on campuses, reinforcing perimeter fencing, and upgrading security camera systems, aiming to create a safer environment for students and staff alike.
