April is National Volunteer Month, a special time to recognize and appreciate those who generously give their time and effort to enrich the lives of others.
At the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), volunteers are truly the heartbeat of the organization.
Every day, they demonstrate compassion and dedication, making significant impacts on the lives of older adults within the community.
This month, PCA is shining a spotlight on three extraordinary volunteers, showcasing their unwavering commitment and the spirit of service that propels the organization forward.
Ms. Vedues is a guiding light at the St. Edmond Senior Center, where she has become an integral part of daily activities since joining in 2018.
Her presence is felt throughout the center—from preparing meals in the kitchen to hosting lively Pokeno sessions that promote laughter and camaraderie among participants.
Known for her joyful spirit and reliability, Ms. Vedues transforms the center into a welcoming home for all.
Her contributions extend beyond standard volunteer duties, as she actively supports the Enhance Fitness class by setting up water and cheering on her fellow participants.
As a member of the center’s Advisory Council, she also serves as a trusted advocate for enhancing programs and services.
For those at St. Edmond, she is not just a volunteer; she has become family, offering consistent leadership and a warm presence that brightens everyone’s day.
On the other side of Philadelphia, Mrs. Phyllis Sledge is making a difference at the Philadelphia Senior Center’s Avenue of the Arts Branch, where she has been a dedicated volunteer since 2012.
Her work includes being a solid presence in the café and assisting with MANNA food packaging for homebound residents, ensuring that they receive nourishing meals accompanied by care and compassion.
Beyond her volunteer efforts, Phyllis embodies the roles of an amazing mother, grandmother, and friend, bringing the same energy and warmth to those she supports at PSC.
Phyllis has become a pillar of her community, always ready to offer a helping hand or a kind word.
Her time as both a member and a volunteer reflects a profound dedication to uplifting others and fostering a welcoming environment for all.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dick Berman has been a technology and tax hero at KleinLife for many years.
In the Tech Center, Dick assists seniors in navigating the complexities of computers, phones, and tablets, ensuring that they feel empowered in an increasingly digital world.
He not only offers one-on-one tech support but also manages the volunteer schedule at the Tech Center, ensuring that operations run smoothly.
Dick recently took on the significant role of leading KleinLife’s Tax Preparation Program, where he provides essential assistance to low-income older adults during tax season.
His tireless efforts have alleviated burdens for many, offering them peace of mind during a stressful time.
In addition, as a board member, Dick has made substantial contributions, including a generous donation that upgraded all the tech equipment in the center, further supporting the community’s needs.
The inspiring stories of volunteers like Ms. Vedues, Mrs. Phyllis Sledge, and Mr. Dick Berman reflect the very essence of PCA.
They offer their time and compassion not for recognition, but out of a deep-seated belief in the power of connection, service, and dignity for all older adults.
This National Volunteer Month, and every month, we extend our heartfelt thanks to them and all the volunteers whose dedication helps bring PCA’s mission to life.
It is their generosity that fosters a more caring and vibrant Philadelphia.
