Severe Storm Warnings Issued for Metro Atlanta as Wild Weather Hits Georgia

Atlanta, GA — The National Weather Service has issued numerous watches and warnings across metro Atlanta and surrounding areas as a powerful line of storms moved through Georgia on Tuesday afternoon.

A potential tornado threat looms, prompting significant caution among residents.

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced a ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, extending it until 5:15 p.m. due to ongoing thunderstorms.

According to FlightAware data around 4:20 p.m., there were 571 delays observed at the airport, with six flights officially canceled, illustrating the severe impact of the weather on travel.

As of about 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported that several severe thunderstorm warnings had expired for areas like Locust Grove, McDonough, Stockbridge, Griffin, and Douglasville, all of which had their warnings expire by 4:15 p.m.

In Peachtree City, the tornado warning had expired at 3:45 p.m., along with severe thunderstorm warnings in the same timeframe. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. in the region.

The warnings for Fayetteville, Jonesboro, and Riverdale also expired at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, reducing immediate concerns for those communities.

The National Weather Service indicated that the storms could produce strong wind gusts, small hail, and heavy localized rainfall throughout the day.

The risk level for large hail was categorized as Level 2 while tornado threats reached a Level 1 status during the afternoon and into the evening hours.

Winds could be damaging, with potential gusts ranging from 40 to 60 mph.

In the week ahead, sporadic rain and thunderstorms are expected each day until Sunday night, with Saturday forecasted to be the only day featuring clear skies in metro Atlanta.

Residents should stay alert to isolated and scattered thunderstorms from Wednesday to Friday, as forecasts predict frequent lightning, gusty winds, and potential hail across North and Central Georgia.

The coastal region of Georgia is also bracing for similar weather patterns, expecting a series of daily storms.

In the Savannah area, a coastal flood advisory is set to take effect from 7 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, further signaling the intensity of the weather.

In line with these conditions, the National Weather Service has issued a detailed forecast for metro Atlanta, particularly for Tuesday.
