The City of Dallas has launched its fourth annual Summer of Safety campaign, a citywide initiative designed to keep youth engaged, active, and safe over the summer months through a variety of free and low-cost programs.
Running from late May to early August, this campaign seeks to promote public safety while providing opportunities for learning, creativity, and recreational activities.
During a press conference held at the Singing Hills Recreation Center, Mayor Eric Johnson stressed that public safety remains a top priority for the city. He highlighted the success of the campaign in contributing to four consecutive years of violent crime reduction, particularly noting a continued decline in crime rates during the summer.
“Public safety is my highest priority for Dallas, and the annual Summer of Safety is a vital part of our data-driven, holistic approach to public safety in our community,” said Johnson. “We are demonstrating to our youth that they are valued members of our community while ensuring their safety and enjoyment during the summer.”
The 2025 initiative aims to build on the success of previous programs, including the SMART Summer reading challenge, the Teen All Access Pass, and the Mayor’s Youth Sports Ticket Program.
Starting July 1, the Teen All Access Pass will be available at city recreation centers, granting free admission to Dallas residents aged 13 to 17 at various venues, such as the Dallas Zoo, Bahama Beach Waterpark, and the Perot Museum.
In addition, the Youth Sports Ticket Program will offer free access to local professional, collegiate, and amateur sporting events, providing an exciting opportunity for the city’s youth.
Mayor Johnson’s remarks were supported by Comeaux, who stated, “This summer, our priority is clear: keep our city safe and our kids engaged. The decline in violent crime is not incidental; it is the result of education, awareness, and community collaboration.”
He emphasized the importance of parents, community members, city leaders, and law enforcement working together to keep children active, informed, and supported while strengthening local neighborhoods.
As part of the Summer of Safety campaign, the Dallas Public Library is providing an array of services across its 30 locations, including free Wi-Fi, computer access, and numerous free workshops and events.
From May 31 to August 9, the SMART Summer program incentivizes children ages birth to 18 to read, explore, and create by earning free books. A kickoff party set for May 31 will be held at selected libraries in partnership with Dallas ISD.
Additionally, the library will be distributing free meals to children under 18 at 15 locations, without requiring proof of need. Teen-focused programs such as Roblox workshops and a Teen D&D program will further engage this demographic.
The Culture Pass Dallas initiative, a collaboration between the Office of Arts and Culture and the Dallas Public Library, will offer library cardholders free access to arts and culture programming.
Dallas Park and Recreation manages 42 recreation centers, nine community pools, 17 spraygrounds, and three Cove aquatic centers, in addition to Bahama Beach Waterpark. This summer, they are also hosting a free summer camp called Discover Dallas for children ages 5-12 and Outdoor Adventures New Horizons at Samuell Farm for youth ages 7-15, featuring activities like kayaking and archery.
The Best Buy Teen Tech Center will provide a creative environment for ages 12-17 to develop their tech skills.
There are also Counselor-in-Training programs available at select recreation centers, focusing on leadership training for teens aged 13 to 17. The department will be hiring over 400 seasonal employees for aquatics roles, with positions offering pay rates between $19.83 and $23.
Finally, the Dallas Police Activities League (PAL) aims to engage young people aged 8-18 through various athletic, educational, and recreational activities, including boxing, martial arts, and basketball training camps, fostering healthier relationships with law enforcement and promoting personal development.
