Jeanine Pirro, the former Fox News host, was sworn in on Wednesday as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, pledging to enhance safety and combat violence in the nation’s capital.
Drawing upon her extensive background as both a judge and prosecutor, Pirro declared her commitment to confront the violent crime that has led some, including President Donald Trump, to label the city as unsafe.
During the swearing-in ceremony held at the Oval Office, Pirro stated, “Violence will be addressed directly with the appropriate punishment, and this city will again become a shining city on the hill in an America that President Trump has promised to make great again and will make safe again.”
President Trump expressed his confidence in Pirro’s ability to enact change in D.C.’s safety measures.
In his remarks, he referred to her appointment as one of the most significant in the country, emphasizing her role in restoring public safety, dismantling dangerous gangs, and ensuring justice is served equally under the law.
“You’ll see very, very big improvements in the D.C. area, that I can promise you,” Trump assured the audience.
Trump’s administration earlier took proactive steps to enhance safety in the District through an executive order titled “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful,” signed in March.
However, this initiative has faced criticism, particularly from Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who described it as “insulting to the 700,000 D.C. residents” and accused the administration of micromanaging the city.
Pirro’s appointment comes after Trump’s previous nominee, Ed Martin, lost support from Republicans due to his controversial past statements regarding the January 6 Capitol riot and his defense of its participants.
Most recently hosting ‘The Five’ on Fox News, Pirro has now assumed her role as the top federal prosecutor in D.C. and addressed her first significant challenge following the tragic shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers last week.
In her statement regarding the incident, Pirro highlighted her zero-tolerance policy towards hatred and crime.
“Just last week, here in our nation’s capital, two people on the brink of beginning their life had hopes and dreams that were never realized because a cold-blooded murderer made a decision to shoot them down on the streets on a cold, rainy night in our nation’s capital.
This will not go without just accounting,” she asserted.
Pirro emphasized the importance of her message, stating, “My voice should be heard loud and clear. No more. No more tolerance of hatred, no more mercy for criminals.”
In her new role, Pirro joins a growing list of Fox News personalities who have transitioned into positions within the Trump administration.
Among them are Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, both of whom have also been influential figures associated with Trump.
Pirro’s relationship with Trump has been longstanding, rooted in her past as a notable prosecutor in New York, making her an early supporter of his 2016 presidential campaign.
She defended Trump vocally during various controversies, including the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape scandal, showcasing her loyal alignment with his political agenda.
In a notable development just before the conclusion of his presidential term in 2021, Trump granted a last-minute pardon to Pirro’s ex-husband, a significant donor within the Republican Party.
Albert Pirro had been convicted over two decades prior on multiple counts of conspiracy and tax evasion and had faced scrutiny for the financial intricacies of his business dealings.
As Pirro embarks on her new role, all eyes will be on her efforts to enhance public safety and restore confidence in the justice system in the nation’s capital.
