In the world of hockey, camaraderie runs deep, and for three seasoned players of the U.S. National Sled Hockey team, that bond has only strengthened over the years.
Captain Josh Pauls, 32, has been a pivotal figure since making his debut in 2008. Declan Farmer and Brody Roybal, both 27, joined the squad a few years later, with Farmer stepping in during 2013 and Roybal in 2014.
Together, this trio has redefined team dynamics, leading the squad with remarkable career statistics.
Farmer leads the pack with 382 points across 165 games, embodying both skill and tenacity with an impressive tally of 217 goals and 165 assists.
Roybal follows closely with 269 career points, dividing his contributions between 131 goals and 138 assists in 155 games. Pauls, a defenseman, rounds out the trio with 202 points, composed of 68 goals and 134 assists over 222 games.
These impressive stats include their collaborative efforts in securing victory for the United States at the 2025 World Para Ice Hockey Championships held recently at LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo.
The gold medal game showcased their prowess as the U.S. triumphed over Canada with a decisive score of 6-1, marking the seventh world title for the team.
Pauls was recognized as the U.S. player of the game, while Farmer earned the title of tournament MVP, emphasizing their pivotal roles in the championship.
U.S. coach Dave Hoff has witnessed these players evolve over the years.
He noted that as they have matured both collectively and individually, their understanding of game management has improved significantly.
“Back when they started, their risk-taking often led to unpredictable outcomes,” Hoff explained. “Now, they handle the game with a much more seasoned approach.”
The trio’s connection dates back a decade, to when the World Championships were also hosted in Buffalo, where they were affectionately dubbed the “Diaper Line.”
Reflecting on those earlier days, Farmer shared, “It’s surreal to think that those who were the older players on the team then are now the same age as I am now.
The journey has been rewarding, filled with lifelong friendships formed through our shared experiences on the team.”
Pauls recollected seeing Roybal as a passionate young talent years ago, asserting, “I remember Brody as a spirited little kid. My focus was always on keeping a good rapport with him.”
He noted the significant transformations they have all undergone, both on the ice and in their personal lives.
Farmers echoed that sentiment, stating, “While we’ve certainly matured, it’s heartening that we still have the same fundamental connection we’ve always shared.”
As teammates for over a decade, they have become more than just line mates; they have become a family that continues to inspire each other.
Roybal expressed the distinct personalities within the trio, saying, “We each bring our quirks to the table—my wild side contrasts with ‘Spuds’ (Pauls)’s quirkiness and Declan’s reserved nature, but together, we create a well-rounded unit.”
In talking about the lessons learned from each other, Pauls emphasized the tremendous work ethic exhibited by Farmer and Roybal, noting, “Their relentless training and dedication elevate the entire team’s performance.
They set a standard that’s inspiring to everyone.”
Coach Hoff has also noted how their leadership has blossomed during his coaching tenure, starting in 2016.
Continuously contributing both on the ice and in their communities, the trio often participates in charity events and outreach programs, enhancing the team’s influence beyond hockey.
“They embody characteristics of true leaders,” Hoff commented. “Without my prompting, they take it upon themselves to share their insights, reinforcing the team’s vision.
Their perspectives add significant value to our locker room dynamics.”
As the dynamics of their positions have shifted—with Pauls now securing the defense while Farmer and Roybal continue their offensive roles—their bond remains intact.
In a light-hearted moment, Pauls quipped, “You could refer to us as The Three Musketeers if you wish, though I hope that no one is calling us the ‘Adult Diaper Line’ just yet.
They truly are my boys and will forever be my brothers.”
This deep-seated relationship within the U.S. National Sled Hockey team exemplifies how sport can cultivate not just remarkable athletic partnerships, but lifelong friendships that withstand the test of time.
