JFK’s New Terminal One Aims for Global Excellence

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is set to undergo a significant transformation with the New Terminal One, developed as part of a $19 billion investment by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

This ambitious project promises to enhance the passenger experience and put JFK on the global map alongside famous international airports.

Scheduled to open in phases, the first phase of the terminal is expected to welcome travelers in 2026.

This initial phase will feature new arrivals and departures halls along with 14 newly constructed gates.

Once completed in 2030, the terminal will boast a total of 23 gates and encompass 2.6 million square feet, showcasing the scale of this development.

At the IATA AGM 2025 in New Delhi, Simple Flying had the opportunity to speak with the CEO of New Terminal One, Jennifer Aument, about the future experiences awaiting passengers.

Highlighting the urgent need for modernization in U.S. airport infrastructure, Aument acknowledged the disparity between American airports and those in global hubs such as Dubai and Singapore.

She expressed great ambitions for JFK, stating, “We aspire to be among the top airport terminals in the world.”

Aument emphasized the importance of delivering an experience that resonates with travelers long after they leave the airport.

The terminal is envisioned as a microcosm of New York City, complete with varied dining options and unique shopping experiences designed specifically for international travelers.

To enhance the ambiance, the terminal will be flooded with natural light, feature a Central Park-inspired space, and showcase live New York City entertainment, further elevating the travel experience.

Incorporating a sense of local identity is key to the development of New Terminal One.

Aument underscored that the construction is deeply rooted in New York, with local and minority businesses receiving contracts worth $1.5 billion, especially from communities around the terminal itself.

Focusing on the artistic contributions that reflect the essence of New York, Aument revealed that upcoming art installations will be a collaborative effort involving local artists and renowned talents from the global arts community.

Such projects will infuse a recognizable New York character into the terminal, offering passengers a distinctive connection to the city.

With the aim of not only serving as a globally appealing travel hub but also bolstering the local economy, the terminal intends to provide an authentic taste of New York culture to travelers worldwide.

Given this development, several airlines, including notable carriers like Air China and Royal Air Maroc, plan to operate out of the new terminal.

However, the transition to a new airport space can pose challenges for airlines as they adapt to the new environment.

Aument acknowledges this potential adjustment period for airlines, recognizing that their brand identity encompasses the entire customer experience, including their airport presence.

To facilitate a smooth transition for airline partners, the New Terminal One management is emphasizing innovation in technology and operations.

Aument has assured that efforts will be made to provide an enhanced customer experience that complements airlines’ brands rather than detracting from them.

The anticipation surrounding the New Terminal One reflects its potential to redefine travel experiences at JFK and elevate the airport’s reputation in the global arena.

As the New Terminal One prepares to welcome passengers, the combination of local flavor, artistic expression, and advanced amenities is positioned to make JFK a leading international travel destination.
