The defamation trial against MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell commenced in Denver on Monday with jury selection in a case that centers around allegations of serious misconduct following the 2020 presidential election.
Lindell, known for perpetuating conspiracy theories regarding the election, is being sued by Eric Coomer, a former director of product strategy and security for Dominion Voting Systems, who claims Lindell targeted him based on unfounded assertions of widespread election fraud.
Coomer filed his lawsuit in April 2022, arguing that Lindell’s false statements caused him severe emotional and physical distress. The suit contends that Lindell made “false allegations of criminal conduct on a scale unprecedented in American history,” harming Coomer’s reputation and livelihood.
During jury selection, prospective jurors were questioned about their news sources, social media habits, and opinions regarding Donald Trump and the events of January 6, 2021. This inquiry aimed to identify any biases that might affect jurors’ impartiality throughout the trial.
Coomer’s lawsuit recounts how, after Trump lost the election, Dominion became a focal point for conspiracy theorists who falsely asserted that the company rigged the outcome against him. Following these allegations, Coomer was named specifically by Colorado podcaster Joe Oltmann, leading to significant harassment and threats against him, which he claims have fundamentally altered his life and career trajectory.
The lawsuit states that Coomer can no longer work within the election industry, which he had been a part of for over 15 years, due to the climate of “unwarranted distrust” surrounding Dominion, driven largely by Lindell’s claims.
