Allison Ponthier, a North Texas native and rising star in the music scene, is making waves with her first headlining tour, aptly named the Karaoke Queen Tour.
The tour kicked off on June 12 and is set to feature Ponthier’s music while building on her previous successes, including her first EP, Faking My Own Death, released in 2021, and a notable performance as the opening act for Bleachers in May 2022.
Her upcoming concert at Club Dada in Dallas on June 20 marks a significant milestone for Ponthier, who frequently attended shows in the Deep Ellum area.
“I was in Deep Ellum all the time during high school and early college; I spent many nights picturing what it would be like to play there, so I’m very excited to perform at Club Dada,” Ponthier expressed.
Ponthier humorously referred to her previous experience as a “chronic opener,” having supported notable artists such as NIKI, Maren Morris, and Hayley Kiyoko.
“I love being an opener, and I’m honored to open for people I’m fans of. But I think it’s time for me to step into the spotlight myself. I’ve been around a few years now, and I want to reach those who have been there for me all along,” she reflected on her new role as headliner.
Having only completed three previous headlining shows, Ponthier emphasized the joy they brought her.
“Those were the best days of my life,” she said, noting the lower pressure that comes with headlining.
“As a chronic people pleaser, there’s always that need to win over the audience, which is both exciting and rewarding. Plus, I enjoy the experience of performing in larger venues,” she added.
This tour also serves as a preview for her anticipated debut full-length album, slated for release later this year.
Since her initial EP drops, Ponthier has navigated ups and downs in her music career, including being dropped by a major label.
“That was certainly a hit, but it allowed me to reassess my journey. I feel proud of the support I still receive and the songwriting I’ve developed in this time,” Ponthier shared.
The name of the tour is inspired by the first single from her upcoming album, showcasing her artistic evolution.
Ponthier’s rising trajectory has allowed her to rub shoulders with music legends like Elton John and Brandi Carlile, while also catching the attention of childhood idols.
Recently, she experienced a full-circle moment as Kelly Clarkson sang Lord Huron’s “I Lied,” featuring Ponthier’s vocals, during her talk show.
“I was not very cool about it when I commented on her post. I’ve been obsessed with her since her American Idol days and even owned her Breakaway CD as my first album. When she won, it inspired me to dream big,” Ponthier said, laughing at her reaction.
Returning to Dallas, especially during Pride Month, holds a special significance for Ponthier.
Not only is this where she came out, began her musical journey, and discovered who truly loved her, but it also serves as a healing moment.
Ponthier is committed to standing up for her queer community, having previously collaborated with Dallas Hope Charities to support the DFW organization.
Currently, she is working with the Transgender Education Network of Texas.
“They make me proud to be Texan. We must think about the safety of all communities, especially in these challenging times for trans individuals. I can’t fix everything, but I am fighting to help protect the trans community,” Ponthier stated.
Expressing her excitement about returning to Dallas, Ponthier emphasized the importance of Pride.
“I want my performances to be entertaining while also creating a space where everyone feels appreciated and welcomed. You’ll always find that at my show, and I hope it can inspire others,” she concluded.
