HOUSTON — As Juneteenth approaches on June 19, the city of Houston is gearing up for a series of celebratory events that pay tribute to this significant moment in American history.
Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, which came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and following the conclusion of the Civil War.
The events scheduled around this holiday not only honor the historical significance of Juneteenth but also celebrate the culture, art, and contributions of the Black community.
On Tuesday, June 17, participants can head to Emancipation Park for ‘A Voice Within,’ an enthralling presentation by composer Joel Thompson and poet Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton.
This performance, which starts at 7 p.m., brings to life the experiences of Black Houstonians through music and poetry, featuring a world premiere with artists including soprano Nicole Heaston and baritone Justin Austin.
A pre-performance panel, moderated by journalist Linda Lorelle, will also take place, providing insight and context to the work.
The following day, Wednesday, June 18, there will be a community documentary screening titled ‘Juneteenth 1865-2025: Kinfolk Family.’
Hosted at the HCC Central Campus from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., this free event aims to reflect upon the legacy of Juneteenth, including a Q&A session with series creators Mia Gradney and Len Cannon.
Also on June 18, tech enthusiasts can participate in the ‘2025 Obsidi BNXT: Juneteenth Tech Forum’ at the NRG Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This forum focuses on fostering connections among high-performing Black tech professionals, encouraging dialogue about leadership and compensation in the industry.
On the official day of Juneteenth, Thursday, June 19, families can enjoy ‘Teacakes and Historic House Tours’ at The Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park.
Offering tours at various times throughout the day, this event allows attendees to explore historic homes significant to the African American experience in Houston, while enjoying traditional treats like teacakes and red punch.
Simultaneously, the Institute of Contemporary Dance in Houston will host a ‘Juneteenth Dance Workshop’ from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This workshop will feature multiple dance styles celebrating the rich heritage of the African diaspora, including Afro-Peruvian and Afro-Cuban dance, among others.
Additionally, POST Houston will be home to a ‘Juneteenth Wellness Celebration’ from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., aiming to promote wellness, movement, and a sense of community through activities like yoga and dance, complete with refreshing cold-pressed juices.
At 10 a.m., The Heritage Society will also present the ‘Houston Signature Experience Tour: From Plantation to Emancipation.’
This engaging tour will include reenactments performed by actress Kijana Wiseman to illustrate the journey from enslavement to freedom.
At noon, the Community Artists’ Collective will host ‘Juneteenth en Blanc,’ inviting participants to dress in white attire and enjoy music, art-making, and light refreshments throughout the afternoon.
In the historic Freedmen’s Town, the ‘Juneteenth 160 Fest’ will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This cultural celebration encompasses workshops, community discussions, yoga, and live music, celebrating the significance of the city’s first free Black neighborhood.
For those looking to enjoy some nightlife, the ‘Juneteenth on Almeda Bar Crawl’ will run from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring several historic bars while celebrating Black freedom and culture.
A highlight of the day will be ‘The Official Juneteenth Return’ taking place in Galveston from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This event promises to be a rich blend of art, storytelling, and community engagement, starting with a panel discussion on the historical significance of Juneteenth followed by a social Vernissage Happy Hour featuring curated art and cocktails.
As the evening unfolds, attendees can enjoy live music and immersive performances celebrating history.
‘Elegant Eats En Ebene’ will also take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Hosted by the African American Health Coalition, this networking event focuses on farm-to-table culinary experiences that spotlight health equity and feature dishes from Chef Daniel Pinesette Jr of Pinesette Soul Private Catering Company.
For art enthusiasts, a Juneteenth art exhibit will be held at Neiman Marcus from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., showcasing works that celebrate the holiday.
Later in the evening, the Juneteenth Juke Jam at Henke & Pillot from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. will serve as an all-day cultural celebration of Black excellence, creativity, and community, promising a lively atmosphere filled with music and networking opportunities.
Finally, Texas Southern University will reveal the ‘Juneteenth Exhibition: Terms & Conditions: The Promise vs. Reality’ from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This art exhibition will explore the legacy of Black liberation post-1865, including original works from prominent Black artists, along with a keynote address by General Barrye L. Price and related panel discussions.
Overall, the combination of these diverse events provides various ways for individuals and families to celebrate Juneteenth in Houston, each reflecting the spirit and history of this important holiday.
As the city prepares for the celebrations, these initiatives aim to connect the community while honoring the resilience and contributions of Black Americans, ensuring that the significance of Juneteenth is remembered and cherished.
