The Ocean Beach community is gearing up for one of its most anticipated events of the year—the 45th Annual OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off.
Set to take place on Saturday, June 27, the fair will transform Newport Avenue into a lively celebration from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
With a diverse lineup of activities, this event is designed to entertain tens of thousands of attendees of all ages.
Music will be a major highlight, featuring a dozen performers spread across two stages, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere throughout the day.
In addition, families can enjoy a kid-friendly inflatable fun zone, while an Artists Alley will showcase curated artworks.
Of course, the Chili Cook-Off remains the centerpiece of the event, alongside a beachside beer garden and the creation of a community mural.
This year’s theme, “Discover Ocean Beach,” reflects the ongoing changes in the community and aims to accentuate the spirit of togetherness.
“It just seemed like the right time to focus on the community aspect of the event, and that phrase just fit,” said Ocean Beach MainStreet Association executive director Denny Knox.
Knox emphasized the importance of maintaining the spirit of the Street Fair while adapting to new city regulations.
The layout this year will be similar to last year’s, with attendees excited about the return of the 92107 free contest booth, which offers chances to win local merchant swag.
This year introduces new tournaments for pickleball and cornhole in front of Winstons, providing attendees with even more recreational options.
Longtime music curator Ted Wigler highlighted the event’s communal atmosphere, noting his 24 years of contributing to the festival.
Wigler expressed his passion for helping local performers gain visibility while also fostering community connections.
“It’s my favorite day of the year,” Wigler stated, underlining how the festival allows friends and families to come together for a shared experience at the beach.
This year’s musical lineup features notable highlights, including award-winning island-grunge band Doah’s Daydream, who will perform at 2 p.m. at the 92107 Stage,
followed by the Grateful Dead tribute group Electric Waste Band at 3 p.m., and reggae favorites The Resinators at 6 p.m.
Alongside great music, food enthusiasts will be treated to a wide variety of cuisine from dozens of specialty food vendors and local restaurants.
Those with a competitive appetite can join in the fun with three food contests.
The day starts with the Chili Cook-Off at 11 a.m. at Veterans Plaza, where tasters will sample and vote for their favorite chili from approximately two dozen competitors.
An additional contest will determine the entry showcasing the best Ocean Beach spirit, with trophies awarded at 3 p.m. on the main stage.
Next, the fifth annual Dirty Birds Wing Eating Contest at 1:30 p.m. promises humorous and lively competition, with proceeds benefiting the OBMA’s Friends of OB Clean and Safe Program.
Following that, eager participants can take part in the fast-paced Hodad’s Burger Eating Contest at 4:30 p.m., which always draws considerable crowds.
In addition to food competitions, art enthusiasts can engage in the beloved community mural painting, open to all ages.
Participants can purchase a square for $25, with supplies and assistance provided, and the finished murals will be placed within the community upon completion.
Funds from these activities will support the OB Clean and Safe Program, contributing to local improvements.
Knox expressed her joy in witnessing the happiness shared by attendees, particularly kids, who contribute to the festive atmosphere of the day.
She also cherishes the moment when the event winds down, noting how quickly Newport Avenue returns to its regular state after the hustle and bustle.
“Our volunteers and staff do a great job, and by 10 p.m. or so, you couldn’t tell there had been a Street Fair that day,” Knox mentioned.
Traffic and parking are expected to be challenges, but there are several options available to ease these issues.
Bicyclists can take advantage of a free bike valet area at Bacon Street and Newport Avenue, starting at 10 a.m.
For those utilizing cars, drop-off and ride services are available through the Old Town Trolley, with continuous operation from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Trolley service will be accessible from the Sunrunner Lot at the corner of Pacific Highway and Sea World Drive, or from the lot near Robb Field at 2244 Bacon St.
The trolley will drop passengers off conveniently near the Artist’s Alley area.
As the countdown to the fair begins, attendees are encouraged to mark their calendars and prepare for a day full of fun, music, delicious food, and community spirit.
With something for everyone, the 45th Annual OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off promises to be a highlight of the summer season.
