ST. LOUIS — The U.S. men’s national team (USMNT) secured a spot in the Gold Cup final on Wednesday night at Energizer Park, overcoming Guatemala with a 2-1 victory that was rarely in doubt after an explosive early lead.
The Americans jumped out to a 2-0 advantage by the fourth minute, with standout performances from Diego Luna, who scored both goals for the USMNT.
However, the match was not without its challenges, as the U.S. struggled with its form during stretches of the first half. By halftime, Guatemala had recorded more Expected Goals and over double the number of shots compared to the U.S.
The closing moments saw the U.S. wobble again following a late goal from Guatemala, as they faced an energized crowd of 20,000 fans, with Guatemala’s supporters rallying their team with chants of “Gua-té!” and “Sí se puede!”
In a remarkable response to their early setbacks, Los Chapines showcased their resilience. Instead of conceding defeat to their more favored opponents, they fought back energetically, progressively gaining ground and generating scoring opportunities.
Guatemala striker Rubio Rubin was instrumental in this resurgence, finding space in the U.S. defense and threatening to pull the underdogs back into the match.
Despite the pressure, however, Guatemala ultimately lacked the quality to convert their chances into goals, allowing Luna and teammate Malik Tillman too much room to operate in the first 15 minutes.
In the second half, the U.S. attempted to stabilize their performance. Patrick Agyemang, who has been the chosen striker for the duration of the Gold Cup, had an off game, unable to find the necessary rhythm as his touches faltered and his passes missed the mark.
As the match progressed, frustration began to set in for Agyemang and the rest of the U.S. team. In the 80th minute, they conceded a goal, prompting an eruption of noise from the crowd as Guatemala ignited hopes for a potential comeback.
In response, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino made key tactical adjustments, bringing on a second left back and a second center back, Walker Zimmerman, to fortify the defense. The U.S. team held on tightly as the clock wound down, with goalkeeper Matt Freese making crucial saves to maintain the lead.
Eventually, the Americans held out for the victory, advancing to the Gold Cup final, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal featuring Mexico and Honduras.
Despite earning a place in the final, the U.S. squad recognizes that they have yet to prove their mettle. They have a vital opportunity awaiting them to capture a trophy, but they will need to elevate their performance significantly to achieve that goal.
In summary, while the win over Guatemala saw flashes of brilliance, it also revealed areas of vulnerability that the USMNT must address ahead of the final matchup on Sunday.
