Third Day of Heat and Humidity Brings Storms to Boston

Boston continues to sweat through a heat wave as high temperatures neared 90 degrees for a third consecutive day, with high humidity adding to the discomfort.

The heat index is expected to climb into the mid to upper 90s across much of the Greater Boston area, prompting ongoing heat advisories.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated as dew points remain in the low to mid-70s, creating a thick atmosphere that feels oppressive.

On Tuesday, a combination of two weather systems is predicted to converge over Southern New England, with remnants of what was once Tropical Storm Chantal bringing the potential for heavy showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service warned that the convergence of systems will result in mostly cloudy conditions, coupled with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Heavy downpours may occur at times, particularly during later hours.

Potential rainfall could lead to isolated flooding incidents, especially in areas experiencing ‘training storms,’ where storm cells repeatedly pass over the same region, resulting in excessive rainfall.

Forecasts predict downpours may yield rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, raising the risk for flash floods in localized areas, particularly throughout Boston, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

As the slow-moving front pushes east, the morning commute will still be met with warm temperatures lingering in the 70s, with many hoping for enough sunshine to rise temperatures into the low 90s.

In Southeastern Massachusetts, residents can expect a mix of sun and clouds, but more cloud cover is likely to dominate. A few early morning showers may occur before a dry spell gives way to afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

While highs will reach the mid to upper 80s, some areas may even touch the 90-degree mark, making for uncomfortably warm conditions.

Meanwhile, Central and Western Massachusetts will see partly to mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers and thunderstorms predicted. Highs in these areas are projected to reach approximately 90 in cities like Worcester and Springfield, while the Berkshires will experience milder highs in the mid-80s.

On the Cape and Islands, cloudy skies will bring the chance for morning showers followed by an influx of thunderstorms in the afternoon. High temperatures will be lower here, generally holding in the upper 70s to low 80s,

In Rhode Island, a mix of sun and clouds will dominate, with temperatures expected to range in the upper 80s to low 90s.

Afternoon thunderstorms are likely, with some lingering rainfall into the evening.

Contrastingly, New Hampshire is set to remain dry in the northern regions, with a comfortable mix of sun and clouds as temperatures climb to the mid-80s.

Some showers may scrape the southeast coast in the afternoon and evening, but widespread rain is not anticipated.

The weather outlook is similarly mild for Vermont and Maine, where partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected, along with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Additionally, Maine’s southern regions and Southern Vermont may see afternoon showers or thunderstorms.

As the day progresses, the focus of the stormy weather shifts to areas south of Northern New England, where the most impactful rain is likely.

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local forecasts for updates as the convergence of weather systems may bring unpredictable conditions.

Authorities emphasize that those in the affected regions should remain cautious, especially those in areas vulnerable to flooding. Monitoring local news and weather outlets for alerts and safety tips is advised to stay safe during the stormy weather forecast.
