I-15 Closures in Las Vegas for Final Construction Work This Weekend

Drivers in Las Vegas are bracing for more traffic disruptions as the northbound lanes of I-15 are shut down through the resort corridor this weekend.

The closure is set to last until 5 a.m. on Monday, as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) crews continue their extensive work on one of the largest freeway projects in the Las Vegas Valley in recent years.

Next weekend, drivers can expect southbound I-15 to close from Spring Mountain to Tropicana, with Decatur being the recommended detour route for both weekends.

Parker Pernyak, a lifelong Las Vegas resident, finds himself accustomed to the constant road work in the city.

“This is just part of the culture here,” he said, referring to the many memes about traffic cones cluttering the city.

Despite his familiarity, Pernyak was surprised by the recent closures while heading out to a store near the Strip.

“I was honestly pretty confused,” he admitted after encountering challenges trying to navigate through the detours.

Northbound I-15 is closed from Russell to Flamingo, prompting drivers to alter their usual routes and seek alternate paths.

The suggested detour to Decatur is noted as a smoother alternative compared to passing through Valley View or Arville, proving crucial as drivers adapt to the situation over the weekend.

The need for these additional closures stems from the final stages of the I-15/Tropicana Project.

In recent weeks, although the highway has been open, motorists noticed some rough pavement and unclear lane markings, which the NDOT is set to rectify during this weekend’s and next weekend’s working hours.

NDOT spokesperson Kelsey McFarland emphasized that this final work includes vital repaving and restriping efforts designed to enhance the driving experience.

“This is a huge milestone for the I-15/Tropicana Project,” she stated, indicating that after these weekends, significant weekend closures should not occur again.

Future work will largely consist of minor adjustments and punch-list items rather than extensive road closures.

Crews are closing in on substantial completion of the project, which is anticipated to wrap up by August, coinciding with preparations for growth in the area.

With the extensive construction efforts aimed to accommodate the increasing demand for roadway efficiency, NDOT appreciates the patience shown by valley drivers over the years.

“We wanted to do it right,” McFarland noted, highlighting the intent to professionally complete the project to benefit the region for decades to come.

As the project approaches completion, Pernyak expressed relief over the prospect of finally having improved roadways.

“I love this city, I love that we’re growing, and I’m all about the culture here,” he said, displaying optimism about the future of roadway infrastructure in Las Vegas.

The NDOT continues to encourage drivers to stay informed about current and upcoming I-15 closures for the most efficient travel routes.

For more information about these crucial updates, drivers can access details through NDOT’s communication channels.
