U.S. Embassy in Kenya Warns Against Illegal Immigration and Visa Fraud

Marc Dillard, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, has issued a warning regarding the dangers and consequences of illegal immigration and visa fraud, emphasizing that the foundation of the U.S.-Kenya partnership is built on strong people-to-people relationships.

Thousands of students, tourists, and business travelers legally traverse between the United States and Kenya every year.

However, Dillard stresses that not all travelers adhere to the laws, with violations of U.S. immigration law jeopardizing both the integrity of the system and the safety of legitimate travelers.

In a direct message, he stated that efforts led by President Trump to ensure adherence to U.S. immigration laws are more stringent than ever.

To put it plainly, he warned, engaging in illegal entry, submitting false information for a visa, working without authorization, or overstaying a visa can lead to severe penalties, including jail time, deportation, and permanent bans on future visa applications.

“Don’t Try to Enter or Remain Illegally,” Dillard cautioned, reiterating that the fair application of the rule of law is a cornerstone of democratic societies such as the United States and Kenya.

He noted that some individuals believe they can sneak into the United States without facing consequences, but this misconception is dangerous.

The Trump Administration has taken measures to strengthen border security, resulting in a significant decrease in illegal border crossings.

Statistics show that in February 2025, illegal border crossings plummeted by 94% in comparison to February 2024, while arrests of illegal border crossers inside the United States surged by 627%.

“If you try to cross a U.S. border or remain in the United States illegally, you will be caught, detained, and sent back,” Dillard warned.

He added that offenders may also face fines and criminal charges.

The issue of visa fraud was another highlight of Dillard’s message.

He described the U.S. visa process as the most secure in the world but noted that some individuals still attempt to deceive the system through the use of fake documents or by lying on applications.

Visa fraud is a serious crime with lasting repercussions.

“If you break the law this way, you may never be allowed to enter the United States again and face additional penalties,” he explained.

Dillard warned that failing to provide the whole truth during visa interviews could not only result in denial but may also lead to long-term ineligibility for future applications.

He urged those contemplating making the perilous journey to illegally cross into the United States to understand the risks involved, stating that their safety, and even their lives, are on the line.

Criminal groups, cartels, and human traffickers are known to target illegal migrants, subjecting them to violence, extortion, and assault, with many who embark on the journey never making it to their destination.

In a broader context, Dillard mentioned that the United States is collaborating with countries across North and South America to prevent illegal immigration before individuals reach the U.S. border.

By securing borders, Dillard stated, the U.S. protects not only its citizens but also aims to prevent the suffering that arises from illegal immigration.

The fight against illegal immigration is also tied to combating human trafficking, corruption, and organized crime.

The U.S. government is taking steps against individuals who facilitate illegal immigration, focusing on smugglers, human traffickers, and even foreign officials who allow the situation to persist.

Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign officials, including those in immigration, customs, and port authority roles who do not assist in stopping illegal immigration.

This policy expands existing restrictions already in place for industry officials in transportation and tourism.

Dillard’s message is clear: those who jeopardize U.S. security by facilitating illegal immigration will not be welcomed in the United States.

He emphasizes that the risks associated with illegal immigration significantly outweigh any perceived benefits.

Illegal immigration could lead to loss of life, victimization by criminals or law enforcement, and a permanent black mark on one’s record that could hinder future opportunities.

Dillard concluded by advising those contemplating illegal entry to reconsider their choices and instead encourage individuals in the U.S. illegally to leave voluntarily.

For anyone wishing to travel to the United States, he reiterates the importance of making the right choice, abiding by the law, and protecting their own safety, the safety of their families, and their futures.
