STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mayor Eric Adams, alongside city officials, launched a multi-agency Summer Safety Plan aimed at enhancing public safety for New Yorkers this summer.
The initiative focuses on robust safety measures to ensure residents can enjoy the season in their vibrant city.
Adams emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “We want all New Yorkers to enjoy summer in the greatest city in the world — and we want to make sure that everyone is safe and protected whether they are in the sun, on the beach, on the streets, at home, or at work.”
He expressed pride in New York City being a great beach town but reiterated the need for community cooperation to maintain safety.
The Summer Safety Plan encompasses an extensive deployment of the NYPD to deter crime and enhance public safety throughout the city.
More than 1,500 uniformed officers will be strategically assigned to 70 summer deployment zones across 57 precincts and all five boroughs, particularly during peak evening hours, when crime tends to increase.
In preparation for this initiative, the NYPD has redeployed officers from administrative duties and welcomed over 1,200 new graduates from the police academy since January.
On weekends, commands within each deployment area will have a supervisor on hand to monitor 311 complaints, ensuring rapid responses to quality-of-life issues.
The NYPD has also established a Quality of Life Division, initiated in April, to enforce regulations related to noise complaints, parking violations, and illegal vehicles, including mopeds and all-terrain vehicles.
Another critical aspect of the plan is the enforcement against impaired drivers on the roads, along with the continuation of the ghost car crackdown across the boroughs.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch commented, “On land, in the air, or by sea, the men and women of the New York City Police Department will be keeping New Yorkers safe this summer.”
She noted that crime has decreased for seven consecutive months and that this summer’s safety plan will reinforce those achievements by intensifying police presence and addressing community concerns about quality of life.
With city beaches set to open for public enjoyment this Memorial Day weekend, the Summer Safety Plan also includes heightened safety measures at these popular locations.
New York City Emergency Management will collaborate with NYC Parks, FDNY, and NYPD to oversee daily beach safety operations, which will include enhanced monitoring for shark activity and the deployment of aerial drones for surveillance and water rescues.
These drones are equipped with capabilities to deploy personal flotation devices, further enhancing safety measures for beachgoers.
Additionally, the NYPD and FDNY announced an enhanced deployment of boats for patrols in New York Harbor, focusing on the city’s beaches.
In efforts to further support the community, the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development will extend youth programs during the evening hours this summer.
As part of these efforts, Community Centers and select school-based sites will provide expanded hours up to 11 p.m., with specific Saturday Night Lights programs also operating on weekends.
Overall, the Summer Safety Plan represents a comprehensive, citywide initiative to bolster safety measures for residents across New York City as they enjoy the summer months ahead.
