Pope Leo XIV’s Early Impact: A Voice for Peace and Social Justice

The election of Pope Leo XIV has created a wave of hope among the 1.5 million Catholics worldwide.

As the first American pope in history, Leo XIV is already making significant strides in his papacy, which began less than a month ago following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21.

Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, Leo spent a considerable part of his ordained life in Peru before being appointed as the head of the Dicastery for Bishops and receiving his cardinalate in 2023.

Upon his election, he chose the name ‘Leo’ to honor Pope Leo XIII, who famously tackled social issues during the first industrial revolution in the late 19th century.

In his inaugural addresses, Leo stated, “Sensing myself called to continue in this same path, I chose to take the name Leo XIV.”

He emphasized methods of addressing the social question that stemmed from historical contexts, thereby positioning himself as a leader attuned to contemporary challenges.

Among the pressing issues, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a focal point for Leo XIV.

In his remarks addressing this technological growth, he highlighted the Church’s duty to offer guidance regarding the social implications of AI.

“The Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor,” he explained.

David Gibson, director of the Center of Religion and Culture at Fordham University, noted that while it’s too early to gauge what kind of pope Leo will be, his choice of name signals a commitment to social and economic justice throughout his papacy.

“Picking the name ‘Leo’ after Pope Leo XIII, he is very much signaling that economic and social justice issues will be a hallmark of his papacy,” Gibson remarked.

Another recurring theme during Leo XIV’s early tenure is his ardent advocacy for peace amid ongoing global conflicts.

His messages on social media reflect his stance against wars, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza.

On May 28, he expressed his concern for the Ukrainian people, saying, “The people of Ukraine have been struck by fresh, serious attacks.

I assure my prayers for all the victims, especially children and their families.”

He emphatically reiterated his appeal to end the violence, underscoring his focus on peace and dialogue.

Describing the situation in Gaza, he labeled it as “increasingly worrying and painful,” reflecting the deep concern he has for conflict-affected individuals and communities.

According to articles in media outlets like the National Catholic Reporter, Leo’s emphasis on peace is a significant hallmark of his leadership philosophy.

He stated, “As a pastor and a world leader, peace in the world, ending wars, doing whatever the Church can do to bring an end to wars, in for example Gaza, the Holy Land, Ukraine, and in other places.

Peacemaking has been a real signature theme that he has stressed.”

While a pope does not enter their role with political platforms, Leo XIV’s messages provide hope for many.

Trish Gathers, president and CEO of the Carmelite System and Carith Ministries, deemed the election of Pope Leo a “pivotal moment” for the Church.

She said, “Under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, we are excited and committed to continue to actualize our mission in a way that resonates with the needs of today’s society.”

Gathers further mentioned her organization’s readiness to work collaboratively with local congregations and community leaders to ensure dignity for all individuals.

She expressed enthusiasm for continuing the legacy of Pope Francis while fostering inclusivity in their ministries.

“Together, we will nurture the seeds of hope planted by Pope Francis, cultivating a vibrant and inclusive ministry that reaches all, while always giving preference to raising the voice of the marginalized and disenfranchised,” she said.

Other New Yorkers share similar sentiments about the new pope, with many feeling optimistic about the future.

Jen Puglia of Staten Island stated, “I do like him so far. I feel he may bring a new feel to the Church.”

Moreover, Lisa Marie Anello, a Catholic now residing in New Jersey, is thrilled to witness a pope from the United States.

“I’m not sure what to say other than it’s amazing to see a pope from the United States,” she expressed.

Additionally, a parishioner at St. Sebastian’s in Queens named Harold remarked positively on Leo’s approachable demeanor, stating, “He seems like a personable guy.

I think he understands the average person based on interviews I have seen.”

As Pope Leo XIV’s papacy unfolds, many look forward to the trajectories of peace, social justice, and leadership he will champion in the years to come.
