Cultural Events to Attend in Washington D.C. This June

This June, Washington D.C. is hosting an array of engaging cultural events that cater to diverse interests, from literature to theater and music.

On Thursday, renowned Spanish novelist Miguel Ángel Hernández will be at Lost City Books for a reading and conversation surrounding his latest work, Anoxia.

Hernández reflects on the melancholic themes of memory and loss, especially in the age of digital technology, through the story of Dolores, a photographer haunted by the past.

Set in a flood-prone village in Spain, the narrative explores the complex relationship between art and death, as Dolores learns to create daguerreotypes under the guidance of a mysterious old man named Clemente.

The novel invites readers to ponder what truly represents our memories and the fragility of life itself. Hernández will read excerpts from Anoxia before engaging in a discussion with Tope Folarin on June 12 at 7 p.m. at Lost City Books, located at 2467 18th St. NW.

This event is free but requires an RSVP.

On Friday, get ready for a night of comedy as Kate Berlant performs at the iconic 9:30 Club.

Berlant is known for her unique comedic style that blends a sharp persona with deep introspection, making her stand-up act a must-see.

With a background in performance studies, Berlant combines humor with critical commentary on the absurdities of modern life, crafting a performance that promises to be anything but conventional.

Having previously starred in the series A League of Their Own, Berlant will bring her fresh comedic perspective to the stage on June 13 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $40 and are available through the 9:30 Club’s website.

The weekend features an immersive theatrical experience with DC, I Love You: Ready or Not at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

This unique production invites audiences to eavesdrop on various scenes of love and relationships set against the backdrop of D.C.

Building on the success of last year’s production that showcased real-life love stories, Katherine Harroff brings a more sarcastic twist to this edition, where characters navigate the trials of romantic comedies within the city.

Performances will take place every 30 minutes on June 14 and 15, as well as June 21 and 22, with single tickets priced at $30 and couple tickets at $50.

This immersive experience is ideal for couples and offers plenty of material for aspiring writers to draw from.

Following a weekend of arts, music lovers will not want to miss the sold-out performances of Mannequin Pussy at the 9:30 Club on June 17 and 18.

The Philadelphia-based band is known for their eclectic sound that ranges from melodic to aggressive, blending influences from across the rock spectrum.

Their latest album, I Got Heaven, has marked a significant evolution in their sound, showcasing the collective creativity of its members, especially with the introduction of a new guitarist.

As the group prepares to head back into the studio, these two nights will serve as a thrilling send-off, reflecting their unique approach to modern rock.

Wrapping up the month, Planet Word will host the annual Juneteenth Literary Jubilee & Black Author Book Fest on June 18.

This year, the event focuses on the theme “Celebrating Words, Rhythm & Flow,” featuring a lineup of local authors and activities that highlight the musicality and rhythm in literature.

From interactive drum performances to a lively karaoke lounge, the event promises to engage participants of all ages while promoting community and creativity.

With activities running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., this celebration invites everyone to partake in a rich cultural experience at Planet Word, located at 925 13th St. NW.
