Residents of Kleberg-Rylie Fight for Recognition and Resources Nearly 50 Years After Annexation

In the late 1970s, residents of the Kleberg-Rylie neighborhood found themselves at a crossroads, debating whether to integrate into the much larger city of Dallas or remain independent, hoping to retain their local tax revenues and services. Philosophical differences emerged, as some felt that annexation would bring much-needed resources, like roads and law enforcement, while others feared they would be neglected amid Dallas’s broader priorities. Herbert Hawers, then-Mayor Pro Tem of Kleberg, voiced concerns that the residents would continue to be overlooked.

Fast forward nearly five decades, and the sentiment remains; residents of this close-knit community, situated roughly 15 miles southeast of downtown Dallas, are still clamoring for the attention and recognition they believe they deserve.
