Five years have passed since Vanessa Perez’s son, Joseph Perez, experienced a brutal encounter with Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies that left him with over 30 stitches and staples to his face and head.
Despite the severity of the incident, the quest for answers remains ongoing for both Vanessa and the oversight officials charged with monitoring the sheriff’s department.
On July 27, 2020, deputies from the Industry Station stopped Joseph, who was 27 at the time, on suspicions of auto burglary.
According to a heavily redacted report released by the sheriff’s department, Joseph allegedly punched and kicked multiple deputies during the confrontation.
The report claims that three of the deputies sustained hand injuries and one broke a leg while responding to Joseph.
In total, six deputies reportedly punched Joseph and applied various holds and takedowns before his arrest.
