Kick Off Summer with Exciting Concerts and Festivals This June

June marks the official start of summer, and with it comes a rich lineup of events showcasing the best in music, culture, and community celebrations across the region. This month offers a diverse array of concerts, festivals, and artistic performances suitable for every taste and interest.

Kicking off on June 1, theater enthusiasts can catch ‘Chicago: The Musical’ at Capital One Hall in Tysons. Known for being the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, this Tony Award-winning production dives into the Roaring Twenties, narrating the gripping story of Roxie Hart’s quest for acquittal after committing murder.

Just a few days later, from June 4 to 8, the Birmingham Royal Ballet takes center stage at The Kennedy Center with ‘Black Sabbath – The Ballet.’ This innovative performance marries heavy metal with dance, featuring memorable tracks from the iconic band.

On June 7, families can enjoy the Manassas Railway Festival, celebrating the city’s historical ties to railroads. Visitors can explore train memorabilia, ride vintage trains, and enjoy various vendors at the Manassas Railroad Depot.

Also on June 7, competitive spirits will shine at the Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race. Hosting multiple race categories, this river event is open to all skill levels, whether novice or expert.

The same day, the WorldPride Parade will transform the streets of Washington, DC, celebrating the history and evolution of the LGBTQ+ community. Set from 1 to 8 p.m., attendees can expect vibrant floats, organizations, and a lively street festival filled with food and music.

Food lovers will delight at the Taste of Springfield, also happening on June 7. This eighth annual event features local restaurants and entertainment, offering a diverse array of culinary options and youth performances at Springfield Town Center.

Music fans can look forward to the Happy Together Tour on June 8 and 10 at The Birchmere. This nostalgic tour, now in its 16th year, promises a lineup of hits from the 1960s and 1970s with beloved acts like The Turtles and Jay and the Americans.

Film aficionados won’t want to miss the DC/DOX Documentary Film Festival happening from June 12 to 15. With a variety of thought-provoking films, this festival explores compelling narratives, emphasizing advocacy and independent journalism.

On June 14, the Puerto Rican Festival will bring vibrant energy to Harris Pavilion in Manassas. Attendees can enjoy traditional music, dance, and authentic Puerto Rican cuisine as they celebrate the island’s rich culture.

A taste of Louisiana arrives on the same day with the Cajun Fest at Breaux Vineyards. This lively event features jazz music, delicious Cajun food, and craft vendors, creating a family-friendly atmosphere filled with fun.

Acclaimed R&B artist Erykah Badu will perform at Wolf Trap on June 14, showcasing some of her best-known songs in this highly anticipated concert. Fans can expect soulful renditions of classics like “Love of My Life” and “Tyrone.”

Additionally, the Fairfax Juneteenth Celebration will take place on June 14. Commemorating freedom, the event includes various activities to honor the legacy of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas first learned of their liberation.

June 18 features the Grammy-nominated James Blunt, who will perform at Wolf Trap, presenting his beloved album ‘Back to Bedlam’ in full, along with some unreleased material. His heartfelt lyrics and melodies are sure to resonate with longtime fans.

Following Blunt, the legendary tower of Power band will grace The Birchmere on June 19. With nearly six decades in the industry, this iconic Oakland R&B group will deliver timeless classics and new music, ensuring a night of unforgettable entertainment.

On June 21, families are invited to the Manassas Bee Festival for a buzzing day filled with activities. This event showcases local culture and includes food trucks, a costume parade, and a mead and beer garden, all at Liberia House & Grounds.

A well-loved summer tradition, the 33rd Annual Barbecue Battle takes place from June 21 to 22 on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Featuring a plethora of mouthwatering samples, hot dog eating contests, and live music across three stages, this festival is a must-visit for barbecue lovers.

To celebrate Pride Month, the Alexandria Pride Fair is set for June 28, featuring over 60 exhibitors, food trucks, and a drag story hour. This annual event promises to be a fantastic celebration of diversity and inclusivity.

Rounding off a spectacular month, The Roots will perform at Wolf Trap on June 29. Known for their unique fusion of hip-hop, soul, and jazz, this legendary band led by Questlove and Black Thought is returning by popular demand.
