In a city known for its nightlife and party scene, Los Angeles is now witnessing a new trend: morning dance parties, dubbed “coffee raves.” These events, designed for those over 30 and seeking a sober way to enjoy music and movement, have recently gained popularity, with Early Birdz at the forefront of this movement.
Early Birdz describes itself as “L.A.’s most conceptual coffee rave festival,” encouraging attendees to “wake the flock up, and get off your phone and dance.” Founded by friends and entrepreneurs Michael Kay Keshishian and Noro Kocharyan, both of whom have extensive backgrounds in the food and entertainment industries, the festival represents a shift towards a more mindful and health-conscious lifestyle.
With ticket prices ranging from $35 for parents to join with their children, to $155 for a behind-the-scenes experience, Early Birdz attracts a diverse crowd. The concept is a refreshing change from traditional party experiences, trading shots of tequila for vitamin shots, focusing on health and wellness through dancing and music.
Keshishian, who stopped drinking two years ago, shared his belief that the culture around alcohol is evolving.
“It’s been a steady incline to stray from alcohol as a lifestyle,” Keshishian told L.A. TACO.
People today are increasingly seeking to enjoy themselves without the influence of alcohol, and this trend is reflected within the growing popularity of events like Early Birdz.
A recent study highlighted the change in attitudes among younger generations, revealing that 7% of 18- to 29-year-olds participated in total abstinence challenges in the past year. Half of those who completed the challenge reported drinking less afterward, and 15% even chose to quit drinking entirely.
Michelle Hoefgen and Mike Hansberry, who drove from Santa Monica to experience Early Birdz, echoed this sentiment.
“I’m not a big drinker, so this is perfect,” Hoefgen remarked.
She added, “I love to dance, and I don’t need any type of substance to start, so this is great.”
The latest installment of Early Birdz took place outdoors at the Vertigo Event Venue in Glendale on June 8, drawing enthusiastic attendees who lined up a half-hour before doors opened. A unique coffee bar experience was curated by a blend of traditional bartenders and baristas, ensuring that the morning rave was both energizing and enjoyable.
Na’Tosha Fairfa, lead bartender at Vertigo, spoke highly of the event’s atmosphere.
“I call baristas ‘coffee bandits,’ and I’m not normally a morning person, but Mike [Kay] has made me a believer in Early Birdz, and it’s actually one of my favorite events he has put together,” Fairfa said.
Los Angeles has long been a leader in health and wellness trends, influenced by its unique cultural dynamics.
The city’s interests in alternative wellness practices, such as vitamin infusions and sound baths, have set the stage for the success of events like Early Birdz.
Dripology, a Santa Monica-based med spa, joined the festivities by offering hydration and vitamin shots, which further complemented the healthy offerings of freshly pressed juices and fruit cups available on-site.
Each Early Birdz gathering features a lineup of local DJs, with the June event showcasing talents like DJ Shai, Jeremy Sole, and Yasmina. The music selection spanned various genres, infusing early 2000s hits with R&B favorites and disco rhythms, creating a welcoming vibe for all attendees.
DJ Shai remarked on the unique energy of a morning rave.
“I knew the group was so open and ready to listen and vibe; if anything, it was more intention because I had an audience that was ready for me,” she said.
Aracely Jimenez, who returned for her second Early Birdz event, emphasized the inclusivity of the gathering.
“Amid all the chaos and unrest going on in Los Angeles, this event celebrated all religions and people,” Jimenez said.
To promote family-friendly participation, Early Birdz offered activities like a face painting station for children, a facet the creators were keen on embodying.
“This is a guilt-free project,” Keshishian expressed, referencing the uplifting nature of the event.
The ongoing growth of Early Birdz has led to expanding venues and evolving experiences, with no set timeline for how long they will continue. The popularity and positive reception have encouraged the creators to innovate and adapt.
As Keshishian stated, they are eager to inspire others.
“To wake the flock up” remains a core mission for the team behind Early Birdz.
The next Early Birdz rave is scheduled for July 20th at 9 A.M., and it promises to be another exciting step in this unique and health-oriented dance movement.
